Congress Revives a World War II-era Lend-Lease Programme for Ukraine

The US House has passed the Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act of 2022, which will provide more military equipment to Ukraine.
The bill revived a World War II-era aid programme established by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1941. The purpose of the aid package was to deliver essential goods to former Soviet countries, Great Britain, and other countries which suffered from the Nazi regime in Germany.
The 2022 Lend-Lease Act would also lend and lease military equipment to Eastern European countries. The loan duration is limited to five years and states the countries’ liability for the leased equipment. The bill also exceeds President Biden’s authority under the Arms Export Act.
417 Congress members have voted for the bill, while 10 Republican members have voted against it.
Previously, the US Senate passed the Lend-Lease Act to the next steps.
