Ohio Governor Passes a Bill Enabling School Staff to Carry Guns

On Monday, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed a bill that allows school teachers and staff employees to carry guns after one-day peace officer training.

From now on, House Bill 99 does not require school staff members to complete a 728-hour peace officer training to carry firearms but has limited the training to 24 hours.

“Those 700 hours of training are intended to broadly train law enforcement,” said Mike DeWine. “The vast majority of that training is not really relevant to a school safety, directly… The legislation does not require arming staff at schools but allows a choice.”

The peace officer trainees must accomplish the first aid theory and practice, the lectures on the history and pattern of school shootings, plus learn de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention strategies.
The bill was moved quickly to the State House in Ohio, despite the condemnations of several school employees from the Ohio Federation of Teachers.

Lawmakers across the US are actively searching for ways to protect Americans against gun violence after the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, on May 24.
