UNESCO Reports 53 Damaged Cultural Sites in Ukraine Since Russian Invasion

More than 50 units of Ukrainian cultural property in several state regions have suffered shelling by Russian forces.
The number includes 29 religious sites, 16 historical buildings, four museums, and four monuments. Currently, seven Ukrainian world heritage sites protected by UNESCO are not damaged. However, the cultural UN agency is alarmed by historical landmarks in Chernihiv, the northern city of Ukraine which is significantly damaged by Russian invaders.
After the war started on February 24, UNESCO initiated immediate actions to protect cultural objects in Ukraine. Previously, in March, the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict announced the $50,000 financial aid to Ukraine to “support emergency measures, including in situ protection and the evacuation of cultural property.”
In cooperation with the local Ukrainian government, UNESCO marked key historical landmarks with a blue shield as a symbol of the 1954 Hague Convention.
