A disk jockey (DJ) creates mixes, remixes, and tracks and plays the recordings for a live audience in a nightclub, a public event, on television, or on the radio. Dj contract agreements define the terms under which the DJ renders their service.

What is a DJ Contract?

A DJ contract is a legal agreement between a DJ and a client that outlines the terms and fees for engaging the DJ’s services.

A DJ contract ensures that the DJ and the client mutually understand  the terms and conditions of the DJ’s services and the fee they charge.

What’s Included in a DJ Contract?

A DJ contract template includes the following information: 

1. The parties – Indicate the name and addresses of both the DJ and the client. Also, describe the specific services the DJ is obliged to perform within the terms of the contract.  
2. Event date and time – Provide the nature of the event, time, date, and address where the client expects you to perform. 
3. Payment information – Specify the DJ service cost and whether you work on an hourly rate or a flat fee. Indicate in the contract whether you require a down payment before the event and the balance after. Clarify whether the deposit is refundable or non-refundable. The contract should also state you will credit the deposit paid from the total cost. 
4. Termination – Indicate the circumstances and ways in which either party can cancel the contract arrangements  and specify the appropriate notice period for termination. Outline what happens when either party terminates the agreement. 

Suppose the client terminates the service agreement and provides the appropriate written notice; the client is entitled to a refund of any money paid, except a non-refundable deposit. But if you terminate the contract,  the terms should indicate that you are responsible for recommending a suitable replacement DJ to the client, subject to their approval. You should also refund all the monies paid by the client, including any non-refundable deposit. 

5. DJ requirements – Outline what you need  to deliver the work successfully. For example, DJ’s require suitable space, access to electricity, and proper equipment to perform.
6. Duties of each party – Detail the responsibility of each party. Typically, the event planner or client is responsible for providing appropriate space, speakers, and related equipment for the event. 

A DJ is usually responsible for sound mixing, incorporating guests’ requests into the playlist, and playing music. The DJ also provides the appropriate music equipment, such as a sound system and turntables. 

7. Severability – Specify that if any part of the agreement is deemed unenforceable or invalid, such clauses will not affect the validity of the entire agreement. 
8. Disputes – Indicate the mechanisms for conflict resolution in case a dispute arises between you and the client. Today, most DJ contract forms bind the parties to alternative dispute resolution, specifically mediation. 
9. Governing law – Specify which state’s laws will govern the enforcement of the terms of the agreement. 
10. Dates and signatures – Provide spaces for the parties to  sign and give the dates on which the agreement is signed.. 

How to Write a DJ Contract 

There are four main steps to creating a legally binding contract form: 

• Fill in the necessary information;
• Discuss and agree on the terms; 
• Send the contract to the client for approval; and
• Signing.

Have a meeting with the client to discuss your terms of service. Inform them of their expected responsibilities, and state your commitments to the client in line with your business and services. Inform the clients of your rates and the requirement for a down payment. Give the client an explanation of the consequences of terminating the contract before the event date. Once you have a verbal agreement on the essential terms, send the written contract for the client to approve and sign. 

Send the Contract to the Client for Consensus. 

Send the contract to the client and give them a chance to review the information provided and to confirm the terms reflect your verbal agreement. Discuss and address any concerns and suggestions the client has before asking them to sign.  

Signing 

Call the client for a signing session once you have finalized all the contract’s details. The signing can either be in person or electronic, depending on the client’s proximity.
